The word "secret" gets abused in travel. It too often means somewhere fragile being loved to death, or worse, private land and closed sites dressed up as adventure. We use it differently, and narrowly.

Our one rule for a "secret find"

Every place below is public, accessible, and actively promoted by an official tourism board — never private property, never a derelict or closed site, never anywhere the authorities discourage visiting. If a destination cannot be cited to an official source, it does not make the list.

Italy’s quiet villages

Italy’s tourism board itself spotlights lesser-known villages such as Neive in Piedmont, Rasiglia in Umbria, and Bagno Vignoni in the Val d’Orcia. [1]

Add Oliena in Sardinia, Fermo in the Marche, and Città della Pieve, and you have a week of Italy most visitors never see — all catalogued on Italia.it.

Norway’s hidden fjords

Beyond the famous fjords, Visit Norway points travellers to hidden gems such as Jøssingfjord and the alpine Hjørundfjord. [2]

Pair them with the island escape of Nordskot in Steigen and a drive along one of the Norwegian Scenic Routes for a quieter north.

Greece, Türkiye and Central Europe

Visit Greece highlights Monemvasia, a medieval fortress town on the Peloponnese, among its quieter picks. [3]

In Türkiye, GoTürkiye promotes the Neolithic site of Göbeklitepe and the sunken city of Kekova; in Czechia, VisitCzechia sends visitors beyond Prague to the spa city of Karlovy Vary and the chateaux of Moravia.

Balance these against the icons in our must-see guide, work them into a route with our itineraries, or browse the whole Secret Finds collection.
